Scrum Day Düsseldorf Scrum Day Presentation

Abstract of the speech

While the cost argument for moving traditional development teams offshore is well-known (and generally, still quite strong), the difficulty of maintaining high bandwidth communication with offshore teams using agile development methods has often been considered a substantial barrier to effective development. At be2, a Munich-based online international matchmaking service with an IT organisation based in Armenia, we choose to challenge these assumptions. With the help of agile42, a pilot agile project with two development teams was planned working with ...

This evening Marion organised another successful Scrumtisch: Usually we either meet for timeboxed discussions on Scrum and agile development questions or a speaker is invited to present his favourite Scrum or Lean or Agile topic.

Today Markus Frick gave a presentation of how Scrum was introduced at SAP, a German software company. They started implementing Scrum in a “small” team of about 60 people, organised in about six to seven teams. The idea was to get people together who are already sort of familiar with agile technologies and let them evaluate what works in the companies context at what doesn ...

What role does a Product Owner have?

Scrum is counted as an iterative and incremental process used for product development and the organization of teams. The classical roles and structures are actually replaced by this procedure method through agile and transparent sequences. There result some new roles from this method. One of them is the role of the person responsible for a product, which is –in scrum jargon- called the Product Owner. This first part is about the Product Owners’ tasks, responsibilities and personal capabilities. A second article will appear in the next magazine regarding the role of the Scrum ...

Scrum gets more and more common as an agile method for the management of projects. Those who want to use the model of Scrum successfully should first take a closer look at the description of the three roles and not mistake the Scrum Master with a Team Leader.
As owner of the second important role in a project team that works with Scrum, the Scrum Master communicates between the Product Owner and the Team. He moderates conflicts and takes obstacles that might interfere with the work of the team ...

The role of the development team

Neither the budget nor the strategies or techniques are responsible for successful IT-projects. The successful realization goes hand in hand with the collaboration of the development team.

As the last two tutorial parts of Scrum ([1], [2]) showed, this agile method for software development knows three significant roles. Thanks to these fantastic testing frameworks we were able to grab a hold on a good chunk of user reported bugs - please keep them coming! We have a wide array of systems and environments for testing, but we'll never be able to recreate every possible system.

Andrea Tomasini will talk in his keynote about: Why Scrum Works

There are fundamental difference of all agile methodes, in comparison with the traditional software development approaches. Following the "style" of the agile manifesto we can bring them to the point:

  • Fact based development over requirements assumptions
  • Market driven features over upfront specifications
  • Flexible development over predefined plans
  • Agile leadership instead of command and control

Many companies have made the change and proven that it works. But is it easy? No, Scrum is not easy. To follow the principles of Scrum requires courage, complete transparency and the confidence to make mistakes. Only people who openly and confidently handle the issues that arise in order learn from them will be successful in using Scrum to develop software and systems in the long run.

Abstract

Introducing Scrum in large organization is often a big challenge, it may take a lot of time to have all the parties in-line and able to start the adoption of Scrum. Moreover having a very dynamic and constantly growing organization, requires to adopt special attention to dependencies between products. You need to have a plan, build a transition backlog, and define your strategy to phase out Scrum into the organization. Agile42 is helping Nokia (Berlin) to make this transition.

We get lots of questions on how to do a proper daily standup works. Well, that can't be said in one simple sentence.

There are some companies that practice transparency to a level that only a few do. Hashrocket for example (the tagline is: "No we are not a company that deals hash to junkies in outer space")

They regularly put up videos on Vimeo of how their own agile process works - and I really like them.

If you want to peek into their daily standups, take a look here and here.

Things I especially like about them:

After some years doing training, we came to the point where we really needed to find something that was good enough to put all together in a reasonable time, the theory of Scrum. Well after some reading over the internet and some inspecting & adapting, we came out ...

to estimate tasks we use in our projects the planning poker cards. It makes fun and gives clear rules to the team to evaluate the effort of a task.

You can order them on our Planning Poker Page

Have fun Marion

What is Planning Poker?

Planning poker is a variation of the Wideband Delphi method. It is simple, makes fun and results in reliable estimates.

Planning poker is mostly used to estimate the effort or the relative size of tasks in software development. The members of the project team come together and estimate each item in a few ...

Agilo 0.7.3.3 maintenance release smashes bugs

Our development team released Agilo 0.7.3.3 which is a maintenance release for the 0.7.3.x series.

The agile42 development team just released Agilo 0.7.3.3 which is a maintenance release for the 0.7.3.x series. We managed to fix some more bugs, pointed out by the nice community of Agilo users :-) Thank you very much for your bug reports!

Some issues we fixed:

  • changed some code which might be the cause for the 'tickets loose their sprint connection' issue that was reported by users previously.
  • added more safety guards so that Agilo should work better for a multi-environment trac when some environments don't use Agilo
  • added missing help pages for the ...

Of course we appreciate proposals upfront for the upcoming Scrumtisch, but mostly people are busy and therefore we collect wishes and questions at the beginning of the event. We write these questions on the "wall" and after we prioritize them. We can make use of electrostatic whiteboard, and a projector, so if you want to prepare something, you are really welcome, just post your idea into the Scrumtisch website

  2. Timeboxed discussion
The 2 highest prioritized "Topics" will be discussed. The others are ending up in a backlog for the next Scrumtisch. We focus on each of the ...

Hi all, today I uploaded a updated version of the Agilo Appliance, now in synch with Agilo release. Unfortunately we do not have the right tools to build an appliance, and it takes a considerable amount of time to configure a new one every time.

If someone out there have an idea on how to do it properly, which include:

  • Reduce the size to the minimum
  • Dynamically configure the network when first starting
  • Use more format or a more portable one?

Thanks ANdreaT

Agilo 0.7.3 cuts dependencies

The latest version of Agilo for Scrum is much easier to install because it does not depend on matplotlib any more.

Yesterday we released Agilo 0.7.3. The most important change is a much easier installation because we removed all the dependencies on matplotlib, numpy and PIL. Now all charts are generated on the client using Javascript and a patched version of Flot :-)

Of course, we fixed another round of bugs and added some small features here and there (e.g. sprints are grouped by closed/running/planned like trac does it for milestones).
