A few months ago, on the way back from the Global Scrum Gathering in Munich, agile42 CEO Marion Eickmann and senior coach Andrea Tomasini have been guests of Geoff Watts for a special episode of The Agile Pubcast, a great podcast he co-hosts with Paul Goddard.

In the pubcast usually Geoff and Paul share their musings over an informal drink, but for this segment the conversation happened in a taxi so it was more of a… taxicast. The main topic discussed was the coaching clinic that Andrea coordinated at the gathering, and general views about what it means to be ...

Meet the Coach

For our semi-regular Meet the Coach series we meet with Marius de Beer, agile42 coach based in Vancouver, Canada.

How did you "discover" Agile?
By accident :-)  In 2002, during an interview, the hiring manager asked me if I do eXtreme Programming.  I had no idea what he was talking about, and obviously did not get the job.  I immediately ordered Kent Beck's book and my life changed in an instant when it arrived 4 weeks later.  For years I felt there was something wrong with the way my teams and I worked, but I could never put my finger ...

Meet the Coach

For our semi-regular Meet the Coach series we meet with Niels Verdonk, agile42 coach and founder of agile42 Netherlands.

What is your background and how you became involved with Agile and agile42?

I started working as a Developer in 1996 and in 1999 I came across the book Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change. At the time I worked in an organisation which prided themselves in the fact the were the best in delivering fixed time fixed price projects. A colleague and I were trying to spread the gospel but back then it was unthinkable we would sell an eXtreme Programming ...

Coach Marius de Beer presented a talk Agile Decision Making in a Flat Structure at the SUGSA (Scrum User Group of South Africa) meeting in Cape Town on 23 February 2017.

The objective of this talk was to give teams practical techniques for decision making in a flat structure. Most Agile frameworks are geared towards delivering software through self-managing, self-organizing, cross-functional teams, where all team members have "equal say."  Holarchy (completely flat structure) is also becoming more popular in the technology world. In both situations, teams frequently waste considerable time when a decision is needed and there is no clear ...

Coach Richard Dolman has recently been a guest on the Mastering Business Analysis Podcast by Dave Saboe. In episode MBA107: Backlog Refinement – From Misunderstanding to Collaborative Discovery, Richard helps us take backlog refinement from an underutilized meeting that doesn’t get the respect it deserves to a powerful forum for collaborative discovery, as he wrote previously on this blog.

MBA Podcast episode 107

Backlog refinement is the act of the team reviewing the items in the backlog and discussing the detail to get clarity as to priorities and plan their work.  It’s an opportunity for the team to come together and collaboratively discover ...

Growing Agile

Andrea Tomasini and Dhaval Panchal published on InfoQ an article on the importance of growing your own agility instead of taking shortcuts

At agile42 we dislike the term scaling applied to agile, or better agility. The reason for our not liking it, is because it evokes metaphors which are bound to manufacturing such as: “scaling a plant”, “scaling production” and all the rest that can evoke assembling and building things.

Effectively establishing continuous improvement to an organization at large requires to develop quite some discipline, infrastructure and most of all openness and trust. Senior coaches Andrea Tomasini and Dhaval Panchal have spent a significant amount of time in analyzing data and cases from different case studies all around the world and the ...

In this keynote Andrea presented guidelines and heuristics for growing an agile organization. You will understand why the first step in any transition must be learning how to change. Meet the Coach

In this new installment of our "Meet the Coach" series we talked with Johannesburg-based coach Regina Martins about change, the Agile world and "the smell of the place".

Can you summarise for us your career path and how you came to be an Agile coach.

Before I fell in love with Agile I had been a Project Manager delivering projects rather successfully using waterfall methods for 10 years. I was introduced to Scrum by my manager and he suggested that it would be a good thing to try it on the projects I was managing at the time. Little did ...
